C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a long-period comet found by astronomers using the Zwicky Transient Facility, a survey camera at Palomar Observatory in California. It passed closest to the Sun in January 2023 and came nearest to Earth in early February, at a distance of about 42 million kilometres. It became visible to the naked eye under dark skies and was widely photographed for its green coma and a faint tail pointing away from the Sun. Its orbit suggests it last visited the inner Solar System tens of thousands of years ago, and it is unlikely to return for a very long time.
