Leonardo da Vinci died on 2 May 1519 in Clos Lucé, aged 67. An Italian painter, engineer and scientist of the High Renaissance, Leonardo trained in Florence in the workshop of Verrocchio and later worked for patrons in Milan, Rome and finally France. He painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, which are among the most famous artworks in the world. His notebooks, filled with drawings and notes written in mirror script, record studies of anatomy, flight, hydraulics, optics and machines, though few of his designs were built. He is regarded as the model of the universal genius. He spent his last years in France at the invitation of King Francis I.
