Golda Meir died on 8 December 1978 in West Jerusalem, aged 80. An Israeli politician, Meir was born in Kyiv, then in the Russian Empire, and moved with her family to Milwaukee in the United States as a child. A committed Zionist, she emigrated to Palestine in 1921, became active in the labour movement and was one of the signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. She served as Israel's ambassador to the Soviet Union, as labour minister and as foreign minister before becoming prime minister in 1969, the country's first woman to hold the office. Her government faced the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre and the Yom Kippur War of 1973, after which criticism of the intelligence failures led her to resign in 1974.
