Construction of the Hofburg Palace

c. 1275

The Hofburg is the former imperial palace in the centre of Vienna, and for more than six centuries it was the main residence of the Habsburg rulers. The oldest parts date from the Middle Ages, and the palace was extended again and again by successive emperors, so that it is now a vast complex of buildings, courtyards and gardens in several architectural styles. It houses the Imperial Treasury, the Imperial Apartments with the Sisi Museum, the Spanish Riding School and the Austrian National Library. Today parts of it are used as the official seat of the president of Austria and as a conference centre.
