Construction of Palazzo Pitti

c. 1458

Palazzo Pitti is a vast Renaissance palace on the south bank of the Arno in Florence. It was begun in the fifteenth century for the banker Luca Pitti, and the Medici family bought it in the sixteenth century and made it the main residence of the grand dukes of Tuscany. They extended it and laid out the Boboli Gardens behind it, and later the House of Savoy also used the palace. Today it contains several museums, including the Palatine Gallery, which holds works by Raphael and Titian, as well as costume and silver collections.
