Construction of Nymphenburg Palace

1664

Nymphenburg Palace is a large Baroque palace in Munich, built as the summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria from the Wittelsbach dynasty. It was begun by Electress Henriette Adelaide of Savoy to celebrate the birth of her son, the future Elector Max Emanuel, with the Italian architect Agostino Barelli designing the original central pavilion. Later generations added wings, pavilions and a vast park with canals, fountains and small palaces. The King Ludwig I assembled a Gallery of Beauties in the palace, portraits of women who caught his eye, and King Ludwig II was born there. The palace also houses a porcelain manufactory, and it is open to visitors as a museum.
