Construction of Heineken International

12 July 1864

Heineken is a Dutch brewing company that began when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought an existing Amsterdam brewery, De Hooiberg, with money from his family. His stress on quality, including a purpose-developed yeast, helped the beer to a reputation beyond the Netherlands. A larger brewery opened in Rotterdam in the 1870s, and the company expanded abroad in the following decades. Under his grandson Freddy Heineken, the company grew into an international group, with its green bottle and red star as widely recognized symbols. Heineken has since become one of the largest brewers in the world, with a portfolio that includes many local and international brands.
