Drottningholm Palace stands on an island in Lake Mälaren, just outside Stockholm, and is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It was begun in the 1660s for Queen Hedvig Eleonora after an earlier palace burned, and was designed by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, then continued by his son, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. Modeled on the Palace of Versailles in France, it has formal gardens and a baroque interior. The grounds also contain a theatre from the 18th century with its original stage machinery, and a Chinese pavilion. UNESCO placed the palace and its grounds on the World Heritage List in 1991.
