Construction of Carlsberg Group

1847

Carlsberg is a Danish brewing company that was founded in Copenhagen in 1847 by J. C. Jacobsen, who named it after his son Carl and the hill, berg in Danish, where the brewery was built. Jacobsen was a pioneer of scientific brewing, and he set up the Carlsberg Laboratory, where the scientist Emil Christian Hansen developed methods for producing pure yeast cultures, which transformed beer production around the world. The chemist Soren Sorensen introduced the pH scale while working at the laboratory. The brewery profits support the Carlsberg Foundation, which funds research. In 1970 it merged with Tuborg, and it is now one of the largest brewing groups in the world.
