Construction of Belvedere

1714

The Belvedere is a complex of two Baroque palaces, the Upper and the Lower Belvedere, in Vienna. They were built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the victorious general who served the Habsburg emperors, to designs by the architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The Lower Belvedere served as a summer residence, while the grander Upper Belvedere was used for receptions. The complex was later acquired by the Habsburgs. The Austrian State Treaty, which restored Austria's sovereignty after the Second World War, was signed in the Upper Belvedere in 1955. Today the palaces house an art museum with works by Gustav Klimt, including The Kiss.
