Construction of Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi

1228

The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi is the mother church of the Franciscan order in Assisi, in central Italy, and was begun by Pope Gregory IX right after the canonisation of Saint Francis, who is buried in its crypt. It is made of two churches, one built above the other, the Lower Basilica and the Upper Basilica, and has a series of frescoes by leading painters of the Italian late medieval period, including Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti and Giotto or his workshop, although the authorship of the cycle on the life of Saint Francis has long been debated. The basilica was damaged by an earthquake in 1997, and then restored. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
