Yuri Andropov was born on 2 June 1914 in Soluno-Dmitriyevskoye. A Soviet politician, Andropov headed the KGB from 1967 to 1982 and became General Secretary of the Communist Party after Leonid Brezhnev. As ambassador to Hungary in 1956 he took part in the suppression of the uprising there, and as KGB chief he oversaw the persecution of dissidents. As leader he launched a campaign against corruption and for labor discipline, but his rule lasted only about fifteen months because of kidney disease, and he spent much of the time in hospital. He promoted the career of Mikhail Gorbachev, who succeeded to power a few years later.
