Thomas Jefferson was born on 2 April 1743 in Shadwell. An American statesman and Founding Father, Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He served as governor of Virginia, minister to France, the first secretary of state and vice president before becoming the third president in 1801. His presidency included the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the country, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. He founded the University of Virginia and designed his home, Monticello. Although he wrote that all men are created equal, he held hundreds of people in slavery during his life, and his relationship with Sally Hemings is a subject of historical study.
