Thabo Mbeki was born on 18 June 1942 in Mbewuleni. A South African politician, Mbeki served as the country's second democratic president, succeeding Nelson Mandela and leading the African National Congress from 1997. Having spent decades in exile, he returned to South Africa after the ANC was unbanned and became deputy president under Mandela. As president he promoted economic stability and the African Renaissance, and played a role in founding the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa's Development. His government was heavily criticized for its slow response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He was forced to resign in 2008 after losing the party leadership to Jacob Zuma.
