Simón Bolívar was born on 24 July 1783 in Caracas. A Venezuelan military and political leader, Bolívar was born into a wealthy family in Caracas and, inspired by Enlightenment ideas and by his travels in Europe, became a leader of the movement for independence from Spain. Known as El Libertador, he led campaigns that freed Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, which was named after him. He dreamed of a union of Latin American states and for a time was president of Gran Colombia, but regional rivalries and political disputes broke it up. Disillusioned and ill with tuberculosis, he resigned in 1830 and died near Santa Marta, in Colombia.
