Rembrandt was born on 15 July 1606 in Leiden. A Dutch painter and printmaker, Rembrandt is considered one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in Leiden, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a successful portraitist and painted group portraits such as The Night Watch, finished in 1642. He was known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, his sympathetic depictions of biblical and everyday scenes and his etchings. He also painted a remarkable series of self-portraits throughout his life. Financial problems and bankruptcy in the 1650s forced him to sell his collection and house, but he continued to produce masterpieces until he died in Amsterdam.
