Paul von Hindenburg was born on 2 October 1847 in 6 Podgórna Street in Poznań. A Prussian-German field marshal and statesman, Hindenburg won fame in the First World War, when he and Erich Ludendorff defeated the Russian army at the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914. He then headed the German army's supreme command, and after the defeat in 1918 supported the claim that the army had been betrayed at home. He was elected the second president of the Weimar Republic in 1925 and re-elected in 1932. Reluctantly, after a period of political crisis, he appointed Adolf Hitler as chancellor in January 1933, and signed decrees that helped the Nazis consolidate power. He died in 1934, after which Hitler combined the offices.
