Osman I was born on 23 August 1258 in Söğüt. The founder of the Ottoman dynasty and the eponym of the Ottoman Empire, Osman led a small Turkoman principality in northwestern Anatolia on the border with the Byzantine Empire. Little is certain about his life, since the earliest chronicles were written generations later, and his story is surrounded by legend, including his dream of a great tree growing from his body. He is credited with expanding his territory at the expense of Byzantium, notably around Bursa and Nicaea, which his son Orhan captured. The dynasty he founded ruled until 1922.
