Oliver Cromwell was born on 25 April 1599 in Huntingdon. An English soldier and statesman, Cromwell rose from the gentry to become the leader of the Parliamentarian cause in the English Civil War. As the organizer of the New Model Army, he won decisive victories at Marston Moor and Naseby, and he was one of the signatories of the death warrant of King Charles I. After the execution of the king and the abolition of the monarchy, he led brutal campaigns in Ireland and Scotland and from 1653 ruled as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. He refused the crown, and after his death the monarchy was restored; his body was later exhumed and posthumously executed.
