Nicholas II of Russia was born on 18 May 1868 in Pushkin. The last emperor of Russia, Nicholas II came to the throne in 1894 on the death of his father Alexander III. His reign saw Russia's defeat in the war with Japan, the 1905 revolution after Bloody Sunday, and the creation of an elected parliament, the Duma, which he tried to limit. He took personal command of the army in the First World War, leaving the government to his wife Alexandra and her adviser Rasputin, which damaged the monarchy. After the February Revolution of 1917 he abdicated. In July 1918 he, his wife, their five children and several servants were shot by Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized the family in 2000.
