The fourth President of the United States, Madison was a Virginian often called the Father of the Constitution for his role at the 1787 Constitutional Convention. With Alexander Hamilton and John Jay he wrote the Federalist Papers to win support for ratification, and as a member of Congress he drafted the Bill of Rights. He served as Thomas Jefferson's secretary of state during the Louisiana Purchase, and was elected president in 1808.
