Hannah Arendt was born on 14 October 1906 in Lindener Marktplatz 2, Hannover. A German-American political theorist and philosopher, Arendt was born into a Jewish family in Germany and studied with Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers. She fled the Nazis, spent years in France and emigrated to the United States in 1941. Her book The Origins of Totalitarianism examined Nazism and Stalinism, while The Human Condition analyzed labor, work and action. Her report on the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem introduced the phrase the banality of evil, and caused fierce controversy. She taught at the University of Chicago and the New School in New York, and remains widely read on power, freedom and violence.
