Guru Nanak was born on 15 April 1469 in Nankana Sahib. The founder of Sikhism and the first of its ten Gurus, Nanak was born in the Punjab region, in a village now in Pakistan, and taught belief in one God, equality of all people, honest work and service, and the rejection of caste distinctions and empty ritual. According to Sikh tradition, he undertook long journeys, called udasis, across South Asia and beyond, preaching through songs and hymns. His compositions are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture. He settled at Kartarpur, where he established a community that ate together in a communal kitchen, the langar, and he named his successor Guru Angad.
