Gerhard Schröder was born on 7 April 1944 in Mossenberg-Wöhren. A German politician of the Social Democratic Party, Schröder served as chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005, leading a coalition with the Greens. His government oversaw the introduction of the euro, the phase-out of nuclear power and a controversial package of labour market and welfare reforms known as Agenda 2010, which cost him support in his own party. He opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq. After narrowly losing the 2005 election to Angela Merkel, he took on roles with Russian-controlled energy companies connected to the Nord Stream pipelines, which drew criticism, especially after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
