Elizabeth I of England was born on 7 September 1533 in Palace of Placentia. Queen of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and came to the throne in 1558 after her half-sister Mary I. She restored a moderate Protestant church settlement and, though pressed to marry, never did, which gave rise to her image as the Virgin Queen. Her reign saw tension with Catholic Spain and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, the voyages of Drake and Raleigh and the flowering of English literature with Shakespeare and Marlowe. She is remembered for her political skill and for the stability she gave England. James VI of Scotland succeeded her.
