Eleanor Roosevelt was born on 11 October 1884 in Manhattan. An American diplomat, activist and First Lady, Roosevelt was the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and transformed the role by holding press conferences, writing a newspaper column and speaking out on civil rights, labor and women's issues. After her husband's death she served as a delegate to the United Nations and chaired the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, which she regarded as her greatest achievement. She continued to be an influential voice in the Democratic Party and was called the First Lady of the World by President Truman.
