Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence. A Florentine poet, Dante is best known for the Divine Comedy, an epic poem in which he travels through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, guided first by the Roman poet Virgil and then by Beatrice, the woman he loved. He was active in the politics of Florence, but in 1302 he was exiled after the faction he belonged to lost power, and he never returned. He spent his later years in various Italian cities and died in Ravenna. By writing in the Tuscan dialect rather than Latin, he did much to establish the Italian literary language. His other works include La vita nuova and a treatise on political theory, De monarchia.
