Claudius was born on 1 August 10 BCE in Lugdunum. The fourth Roman emperor, Claudius was born in Lugdunum in Gaul and was the first emperor to be born outside Italy. A member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, he was thought unfit for public life because of a limp and a stammer, and spent much of his early years as a scholar. He was proclaimed emperor by the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of Caligula. His reign saw the Roman conquest of Britain, the annexation of Thrace and Mauretania, and public works such as the port at Ostia, as well as administrative reforms. He was probably poisoned by his wife Agrippina, and was succeeded by her son Nero.
