Baekje was one of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea, along with Goguryeo and Silla, and occupied the southwest of the peninsula. According to tradition, it was founded by Onjo, a prince of Goguryeo, near present-day Seoul, and later moved its capital south to Ungjin and Sabi as it came under pressure from its neighbors. Baekje was a sophisticated maritime state, with close links to China and Japan, and it played an important role in passing on Buddhism, writing, art and technology to Japan. It left impressive remains, such as the tomb of King Muryeong and gilt-bronze incense burner. The kingdom was destroyed by an alliance of Silla and Tang China.
