Claude Monet was born on 14 November 1840 in Paris. A French painter, Monet was a founder of Impressionism, and the movement took its name from his 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise. He worked outdoors to capture changing light and atmosphere, and he painted the same subjects repeatedly at different times of day, as in his series of haystacks, Rouen Cathedral and the Thames. After settling in Giverny he created a garden with a water-lily pond that became the subject of his late work. The huge Water Lilies panels, which he gave to the French state, are displayed at the Orangerie in Paris. He continued painting in his eighties despite cataracts.
