Antoni Gaudí was born on 25 June 1852 in Reus. A Catalan architect, Gaudí became the best-known figure of Catalan Modernisme and designed some of the most distinctive buildings in Barcelona. Drawing on nature, he used flowing curves, parabolic arches, colourful ceramic mosaics and inventive structural solutions. His works include Casa Vicens, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell and the crypt of the Colònia Güell church. From 1883 he devoted himself to the Sagrada Família, a vast basilica which he left unfinished and which is still under construction. A devout Catholic who lived austerely in his final years, he died after being struck by a tram. Seven of his works are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
