Austro-Prussian War

from 14 June 1866 to 26 July 1866

The Austro-Prussian War, also called the Seven Weeks' War, was fought in the summer of 1866 between the Austrian Empire and Prussia, each supported by allies among the German states, while Italy fought on the Prussian side. The conflict grew out of rivalry over the leadership of the German states, which the Prussian minister-president Otto von Bismarck was determined to settle in Prussia's favor. Prussian armies, using the railway and the breech-loading needle gun, won a decisive victory at Königgrätz in Bohemia on 3 July. The Peace of Prague ended the Austrian role in German affairs, and Prussia annexed several north German states and formed the North German Confederation. The war paved the way for the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership in 1871.
