The Vandalic War was a campaign by the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, emperor Justinian I to retake North Africa from the Vandal Kingdom, which had held it since the fifth century. A fleet carrying an army commanded by the general Belisarius sailed from Constantinople and landed in Africa, and it defeated the Vandal king Gelimer in battles at Ad Decimum and Tricamarum. Carthage was captured, and Gelimer surrendered the following spring. The war was quick and decisive, though fighting against Berber tribes and army mutinies continued for years. Justinian celebrated his success and the province returned to imperial rule until the Arab conquests in the seventh century.
