After two hard wars in 101 to 102 and 105 to 106, the Emperor Trajan defeated King Decebalus of Dacia and made his kingdom, in what is now Romania, a Roman province. The gold and silver mines of the Carpathians paid for monuments in Rome such as Trajan's Forum, and Trajan's Column, finished in 113, shows the campaigns in a spiral relief 190 metres long with over 2,500 figures. Latin settlers moved in, and the Romanian language is descended from their speech. Rome abandoned Dacia around 271.
