Seven Years' War

from 17 May 1756 to 15 February 1763

The Seven Years' War was a global conflict involving most of the great powers of Europe, which fought in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, West Africa, India and the Philippines. In Europe it pitted Prussia under Frederick the Great, allied with Britain, against Austria, France, Russia and others, after Austria sought to recover the province of Silesia. Overseas, Britain and France struggled for empire, a contest known in North America as the French and Indian War. The peace treaties of 1763 left Britain with Canada, Florida and a dominant position in India, while Prussia kept Silesia. The huge cost of the war led Britain to impose new taxes on its American colonies, which helped lead to the American Revolution.
