The Russo-Persian War of 1804 to 1813 was fought after Russia annexed Georgia, which Persia regarded as part of its sphere of influence, and moved to expand south of the Caucasus. The fighting was centred on territories in the southern Caucasus, including Karabakh, Shirvan and Baku. Persia's crown prince Abbas Mirza led modernised forces trained with the help of British and French advisers, but they were defeated in major battles, notably at Aslanduz in 1812. Under the Treaty of Gulistan, Persia ceded Dagestan and most of its Caucasian territories to Russia and recognised Russian control of Georgia. The loss was a major blow to Persia, and it led to another war in the 1820s.
