Rise of House of Glücksburg

1825

The House of Gluecksburg is a royal house of German origin that has come to supply monarchs for several European countries. It takes its name from the town of Gluecksburg in Schleswig-Holstein, and the family's modern line began in the 1820s when Duke Frederick William received the title of Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Gluecksburg. His son became King Christian IX of Denmark in 1863, and his descendants include the kings of Denmark and Norway as well as the former royal family of Greece. Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, belonged to the Greek branch, so that today's British royal family also descends from the house through the male line of Philip. Christian IX was called the father-in-law of Europe.
