Launch of Los Angeles Times

1881

The Los Angeles Times is a daily newspaper that began publishing in Los Angeles in 1881 as the Los Angeles Daily Times. It was taken over by Harrison Gray Otis, and under his son-in-law Harry Chandler and later generations of the Chandler family, it became the dominant paper of the booming city and a voice of the region's business elite. In the second half of the twentieth century, it grew into a national newspaper with a strong reputation for reporting, winning dozens of Pulitzer Prizes. In the 2000s, it went through changes in ownership and large staff cuts, and in 2018 it was bought by the physician and businessman Patrick Soon-Shiong. It remains one of the largest newspapers in the United States.
