Late Period of ancient Egypt

from 664 BCE to 332 BCE

The Late Period of ancient Egypt began with the reunification of the country by Psamtik I, founder of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty, which ruled from Sais in the Nile Delta after the Assyrians had left, and it ended with the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great. It was a period of artistic revival that looked back to the Old Kingdom, and Greek traders and mercenaries became important in the country. The Persians conquered Egypt in the time of Cambyses, and Persian rule was interrupted by periods of independence under the Twenty-eighth to Thirtieth Dynasties, until the Persians returned for a short time. Nectanebo II was the last native pharaoh, and the period was followed by the rule of the Ptolemies.
