Kingdom of Numidia

from 202 BCE to 46 BCE

Numidia was a Berber kingdom in North Africa, in the area of present-day Algeria and part of Tunisia, which emerged as the Numidian tribes were united under a single ruler. Its king Masinissa allied with Rome against Carthage in the Second Punic War, and was rewarded with an enlarged realm. Later Numidia became involved in Roman politics, as in the war against King Jugurtha, and eventually it sided with Pompey in the Roman civil war. King Juba I was defeated by Julius Caesar at the battle of Thapsus, and the kingdom was annexed as a Roman province. The Numidians were famed for their light cavalry, which fought for both Carthage and Rome.
