Kingdom of Armenia

from 553 BCE to 428 CE

The Kingdom of Armenia was an ancient state in the Armenian Highland, between the Black Sea, the Caspian and Mesopotamia. It first appears as an independent kingdom under the Orontid dynasty after the Persian Empire and was later part of the Seleucid sphere. Under Tigranes the Great in the first century BCE, it briefly became a major power controlling land from the Caucasus to Syria, until Rome defeated it. In 301 CE, under King Tiridates III and Saint Gregory the Illuminator, Armenia became the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion. The kingdom was long a buffer between Rome and Persia, and its monarchy ended when the Persian Sasanians abolished it.
