Franciaf

from 481 CE to 843 CE

Francia was the early medieval kingdom of the Franks, which grew from the conquests of Clovis I, the Merovingian king who united most of the Frankish tribes and defeated the last Roman authority in northern Gaul. Clovis converted to Catholic Christianity, which won him the support of the Gallo-Roman church and population. Later the Merovingians lost real power to their palace mayors, and the Carolingian family took the throne, under Pepin the Short and Charlemagne, who extended the realm across much of Western Europe and was crowned emperor. After the death of Charlemagne's son Louis the Pious his sons divided the empire in the Treaty of Verdun, creating the West, Middle and East Frankish kingdoms, from which France and Germany eventually emerged.
