The Peloponnesian League was a military alliance of ancient Greek city-states led by Sparta, created in the 6th century BCE. Its members, who included Corinth, Elis, Tegea and Megara, and later Thebes, promised to follow Sparta in war and to have the same friends and enemies. It was not an alliance based on tribute: the allies met in a congress that Sparta called, and each state had a vote. The league fought the Persians at Plataea and later became the rival of the Athenian-led Delian League, which led to the Peloponnesian War, in which Sparta won with Persian financial support. The league broke up after the Theban victory over Sparta at Leuctra and the invasion of the Peloponnese by Epaminondas.
