Founding of Lomonosov Moscow State University

12 January 1755

Lomonosov Moscow State University was founded on 12 January 1755 by a decree of Empress Elizabeth of Russia, on the initiative of the statesman Ivan Shuvalov and the polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, who gave the university its name. It was first housed near Red Square and opened with faculties of law, medicine and philosophy. Its anniversary is celebrated as Tatiana's Day, after the patron saint of students. In the twentieth century it expanded greatly, and in the 1950s it moved its main building to the Sparrow Hills, where a Stalin-era skyscraper dominates the site. It is the oldest and largest university in Russia and has produced many scientists, writers and political figures.
