Founding of Buenos Aires

11 June 1580

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, stands on the western shore of the Rio de la Plata. A first Spanish settlement was set up in the 1530s by Pedro de Mendoza, but it was abandoned after attacks by the local people and shortages of supplies. The city was refounded decades later by Juan de Garay, coming from Asuncion, who named it the City of the Most Holy Trinity and Port of Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires. It remained a minor colonial port until it became the capital of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata in 1776. After independence, it grew rapidly with European immigration into one of the largest cities in South America.
