The First Dynasty of Egypt was the first line of kings of the unified Egyptian state, according to the ancient lists of rulers. Tradition attributes the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt to a founder called Menes, often identified with the king Narmer, who is shown on the Narmer Palette. The rulers of the dynasty, among them Aha, Djer and Den, probably governed from near Memphis and were buried in tombs at Abydos. In their time hieroglyphic writing, royal administration and the cult of the dead developed in recognizable form. The dynasty is the start of the Early Dynastic Period and the foundation of the long history of pharaonic Egypt.
