English Civil War

from 1642 to 1651

The English Civil War was a series of armed conflicts between supporters of King Charles I, the Royalists, and those of Parliament, in England, with Scotland and Ireland also deeply involved. The causes included disputes over the king's power to tax and to rule without Parliament, as well as religious tensions. Parliament's New Model Army, with commanders such as Oliver Cromwell, defeated the Royalists. Charles was tried and executed in 1649, the monarchy and House of Lords were abolished, and England became a Commonwealth under Cromwell. The monarchy was restored in 1660, but the wars established that the Crown could not govern without Parliament.
