Dione is a mid-sized icy moon of Saturn, discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini at the Paris Observatory on the same night as Tethys. Cassini named the four moons he found the stars of Louis, in honour of King Louis XIV, and the individual names used today were proposed much later by John Herschel. Dione is made largely of water ice around a denser rocky core, and its trailing hemisphere shows bright wispy terrain that proved to be a network of icy cliffs and fractures. Images from the Cassini spacecraft revealed this detail, and the moon may possess a subsurface ocean.
