Death of Nikola Tesla

7 January 1943

Nikola Tesla died on 7 January 1943 in New York City, aged 86. A Serbian-American engineer and inventor, Tesla was born in the village of Smiljan, then in the Austrian Empire, and emigrated to the United States in 1884, where he briefly worked for Thomas Edison. His inventions include the induction motor and polyphase alternating-current systems, which George Westinghouse licensed and developed, and the Tesla coil. He also experimented with wireless transmission of power and radio. His plan for the Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island failed for lack of funds, and he died in a New York hotel room, almost penniless. The unit of magnetic flux density, the tesla, is named in his honour.
