Lewis Carroll died on 14 January 1898 in The Chestnuts, aged 65. A British author and scholar, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Carroll was born in Cheshire and spent most of his adult life at Christ Church, Oxford, where he taught mathematics and was ordained a deacon. Under his pen name he wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865, and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which grew out of stories he told to Alice Liddell, the daughter of the college's dean, and her sisters. These works, along with the nonsense poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark, are famous for their wordplay and logic. As Dodgson he also wrote on mathematics and logic, and he was a pioneering amateur photographer.
